Netflix Announces ‘Young Thug On Trial’ Documentary

The highly publicized and controversial legal battle involving Atlanta rapper Young Thug will be the subject of a new feature-length documentary titled “Young Thug On Trial,” slated for release on Netflix in 2027.

The film aims to provide a comprehensive look at the YSL RICO case, which became one of the longest and most complex criminal proceedings in Georgia history. The project is being produced by Passion Pictures and directed by Shianne Brown. Executive producers Kari Lia and Hamish Fergusson are overseeing the 90-minute documentary, which explores the rise of Jeffery Williams, known professionally as Young Thug, from the streets of Atlanta to global stardom.

The YSL TRIAL:

The narrative will center on the prosecution’s attempt to prove that his music label, Young Slime Life (YSL), was a front for a violent criminal street gang. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker, who presided over the latter half of the trial, confirmed her involvement in the project during a recent appearance on the “What You Need to Know” podcast.

Whitaker noted that she had already been interviewed for the film but was restricted from sharing specific details due to an exclusivity agreement with the filmmakers. “Netflix and Passion Pictures are doing a documentary of the YSL trial,” Whitaker said. “I was interviewed for that documentary, and it is supposed to air sometime next year.”

The trial, which began after Williams’ arrest in May 2022, sparked national debate regarding the use of rap lyrics as evidence in criminal courtrooms. Defense attorneys argued that the lyrics were works of fiction and artistic expression, while prosecutors maintained they served as admissions of real-world criminal activity.

The documentary is expected to address these cultural implications and the broader impact on the First Amendment rights of artists. The legal proceedings were marked by significant delays and internal drama, including the mid-trial removal of the original presiding judge, Ural Glanville. Williams eventually reached a plea deal in October 2024, pleading guilty and no-contest to various drug, firearm and gang-related charges.

He was sentenced to time served and 15 years of probation, narrowly avoiding further prison time. Netflix has a history of documenting high-profile figures in the music industry, previously releasing projects focused on Kanye West and Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Young Thug On Trial” will join this lineup, offering behind-the-scenes access to a case that many legal experts believe will set a precedent for how hip-hop is treated within the American justice system.
