Nas Secures a $5.5B Queens Casino Deal as Jay-Z’s Bid Falls Short

Nas has become a central figure in a massive new project that will bring a $5.5 billion Resorts World Casino to Queens.

The decision came after a vote from the New York State Gaming Commission, officially placing the development in the rapper’s hometown. While Nas did not attend the meeting where the deal was sealed, the moment still turned into a headline-worthy exchange.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards used the opportunity to take a swipe at Jay-Z, whose proposal to open a Caesars Palace casino in Brooklyn failed to move forward. Just before casting the decisive vote, Richards cracked, “Sorry, Jay-Z, we win again.” His comment drew attention not only for the competitive jab but also for echoing the spirit of Nas’ classic diss record. Richards added that he was also directing that same energy at Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, claiming he wanted to let some “ether” fly to make his “soul burn slow.”

The response from Roc Nation was immediate. Desiree Perez, who serves as president of Jay-Z’s company, expressed frustration with the outcome. She criticized those who opposed the Brooklyn plan, suggesting they overlooked the long-term financial and cultural value it might have delivered to the borough.

For now, Queens stands on top. The Resorts World project still has to secure its official gaming license, but investors are optimistic that the approval will come before the year closes. If granted, the casino would solidify Queens as a major hub in the state’s gambling industry.

Although the playful rivalry between the two boroughs stole the spotlight, the real story is the scale of the investment. Nas has aligned himself with one of the largest casino developments in New York, marking another victory for both the artist and his community.
