Whitney Houston Estate Sets the Record Straight against Oprah’s Stage Fall Claim

The estate of the late Whitney Houston issued a sharp rebuke against Oprah Winfrey this week following comments the media mogul made regarding a 2009 stage fall involving the iconic singer.

The dispute centers on whether Houston’s tumble during a sound check for Winfrey’s talk show was the result of substance abuse or merely a professional mishap. While speaking Tuesday at the Cannes Lions conference in France, Winfrey recalled the incident, which took place during Houston’s highly publicized comeback appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Winfrey told the audience that Houston fell off the stage because she was “back on drugs” at the time. The media icon further claimed she pleaded with the studio audience not to leak photos of the accident to protect the singer’s reputation.

“I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that,” Winfrey said during the conference. She noted that while the audience complied with her request at the time, such a secret would be impossible to keep in the current era of social media. The Houston estate wasted little time in responding to these allegations, releasing a statement via Instagram that disputed Winfrey’s version of events.

While the estate confirmed that Houston did indeed fall from the stage, they maintained that the accident had nothing to do with her well-documented personal struggles. “It was during a sound check and it was due to the darkness of the area and her unfamiliarity with the stage,” the estate said in the statement. The representatives for the late “I Will Always Love You” singer insisted that Houston was “absolutely not high” during the rehearsal. The estate acknowledged that while Houston faced significant “personal battles” throughout her career, it is “inaccurate and unfair” to attribute every misfortune in her life to those struggles.

They argued that the 2009 performance was a display of discipline and professional commitment rather than the behavior of an impaired artist. “Whitney’s humanity included triumphs and struggles, but on that day, she showed up as the professional and gifted artist she always worked to be,” the statement continued. “We owe her the dignity of telling the truth not repeating myths.”

Houston died at the age of 48 in 2012. An autopsy later determined her death was an accidental drowning in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. Despite her tragic end, her estate remains vigilant in defending her legacy against what they characterize as unfair assumptions regarding her work ethic and sobriety during key career moments.
