J. Cole’s Chinese Basketball Association Ends Due To Visa Issues

J Cole saw his latest basketball pursuit in the Chinese Basketball Association end almost as soon as it began. His stint with the Nanjing Monkey Kings lasted just one game due to visa complications.

Cole arrived in China with plans to play multiple games this spring. The Grammy-winning artist targeted at least three appearances as part of his continued push into professional basketball. However, delays in securing a work visa forced him to leave early.

In a blog post, Cole described the demanding schedule leading into the trip. “I recorded Nadeska, Lost in Vegas, and then Melo all within one week,” he wrote.

He then detailed the abrupt transition overseas. “[I] had to immediately head to Hong Kong to wait for a visa so I could play basketball in mainland China.”

The process stalled his momentum. “The work visa process took way longer than expected, so I was only able to play in one before heading back,” Cole explained.

The setback limited his on-court opportunity in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.

Despite the shortened run, Cole embraced the experience. “I got to play 8 minutes in one of the top leagues in the world,” he wrote.

He acknowledged the challenge of adjusting quickly. “Got a few good looks but wasn’t able to hit one,” he added. Still, he remained optimistic. “A couple more games and maybe those shots would have started to fall!”

Cole also reflected on the reception from fans in China. He admitted he was “blown away” by the support.

He added he “didn’t realize there were so many people in China that rocked with my music.”

The appearance marks another chapter in Cole’s unconventional basketball journey. He previously competed in the Basketball Africa League and in Canada.

Looking ahead, Cole remains open to returning. “I told the team that if I could stay in shape I would be down to play for a longer amount of games next year,” he said. “I’m wildin???? We’ll see. DREAMER.”
