A Mississippi grand jury has declined to indict anyone in connection with the death of Nolan Wells, according to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
The 23-member grand jury unanimously returned a no true bill Monday after reviewing evidence from the investigation. The decision means no criminal charges will be filed based on the evidence presented.
The grand jury reviewed phone forensic reports, GPS data, security footage and 132 subpoenas. Prosecutors also presented testimony from 43 witnesses.
Wells was found dead in waters near Horn Island on July 6. He had traveled there with friends two days earlier for a July Fourth celebration.
Investigators determined Wells traveled aboard The Triton, one of three boats used by the group. The vessel later experienced a bilge pump and motor failure while returning toward the mainland.
The Triton took on water and required a tow from another vessel. Investigators concluded Wells remained on Horn Island after the boats departed.
Wells’ cellphone returned to the mainland without him. Investigators noted other passengers’ phones also traveled aboard separate boats.
The Mississippi State Chief Medical Examiner and an independent forensic pathologist retained by Wells’ family both determined that the cause and manner of death were undetermined.
Court documents state accidental drowning remains consistent with the evidence. Neither examiner ruled out that possibility.
Both officials identified nonfatal bruising on the back of Wells’ head. Investigators found no evidence of fatal physical trauma.
A witness testified that Wells slipped awkwardly from a boat. The witness said Wells continued socializing afterward and showed no apparent injury.
Toxicology testing found no cocaine. Investigators also determined Wells purchased alcohol using a fake identification document.
The grand jury found no evidence that adults over 21 supplied alcohol to Wells or his friends.
Jurors also rejected online allegations involving a fight and alleged misconduct by Wells’ friends and their families. The jury concluded that no criminal conduct occurred.
Investigators further determined viral pool-party photographs showing Wells predated July Fourth. Officials also found that circulated audio from a SeaTow call involving The Triton differed from the original recording.
The investigation addressed claims that medical officials withheld major organs before an independent examination. The family’s pathologist confirmed standard procedures were followed.
The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office noted Mississippi has no statute of limitations for homicide. The case could be presented to another grand jury if credible new evidence indicates foul play.
